Collies
by:Nikki Carroll
With their breathtaking beauty and human like intelligence, Collies are one of the best known and loved of all dog breeds in America. Everyone knows and loves Lassie and still reads the Collie books written in the 1920s and '30s by Albert Payson Terhune.
A limited amount of information is known with certainty of the origin of the Collie, but his cleveroutward appearance would seem to suggest a relationship with the wild dog. Alothugh, they were produced from the old working dogs, the Collie is nearly a distinct breed of their own. They are considered to be the superior in instinct and intelligence to all other breeds, and are actually born perfectly trained for service. They make excellent sporting dogs as well and can be taught to do the same duties as many other breeds including the Retriever. He is clever at hunting, having an excellent nose, is a good vermin-killer, and a most faithful watch, guard, and companion.
The Collie is one of the finest show dogs. He is considered the most tractable, and is certainly the most agile. They are both charming and polished which is why they surpass most breeds at this time.
The Collie is an active dog poised with stamina, intelligence and freedom. They make excellent pets for both service and companionship.
