These days, designer dog clothes have become extremely popular items among dog owners, but are they really necessary or completely frivolous? Surprisingly, they can go either way depending on the article in question. For example, costumes are usually solely for the owner’s enjoyment, and are usually harmless Let’s face it, seeing your little one dressed like Superman or wearing a Santa Hat is priceless.

On the other hand, when winter hits, even most veterinarians would suggest extra protection from the elements. Dr. Bruce Fogle, author of several dog books, says "Small dogs and delicate breeds with thin single coats may need additional protection from the winter rain and cold." Warm dog coats or well knit dog sweaters may be vital small breeds like Chihuahuas. You may find some that disagree with dressing dog, but clothing for dogs are not only adorable, but can serve a valuable function.

The right pet accessories can actually save you a trip to the vet and protect your precious pet. Pet accessories are similar to dog clothes in that some can be frivolous while others can be a nessesity. For example, a simple bandana is not usually needed, but quality dog boots may be. Those who live in big cities know how hazerdous it can become for dogs when it snows and rock salt is distributed. The dogs’ paws, when exposed to the ice and snow, can be cut and the rock salt can not only cause them to bleed but can cause further injury and discomfort. Dog shoes can easily solve this problem and can be cleaner than paw wax. Even Dr. Fogle says that "if winter is particularly harsh where you live, you could consider insulated boots for your dog." So, if you're having reservations about getting your best friend some dog clothes, remember the benefits.
